Stylemark

Fix the style slips before the copy desk sees them.

Stylemark checks newsroom style, grammar and spelling as you type. Every check runs on your Mac, so an unpublished story never leaves it.

Coming soon to the Mac App Store. Requires macOS 26.

Written for reporters, and for anyone who keeps docs in Markdown

In the newsroom

Stylemark knows the conventions a copy editor would mark: dates, times, ages, dollars, percentages, state names and dashes. It doesn't stop at style.

  • Grammar and spelling. Grammar checks from Harper, tuned so they don't argue with news style, and spelling from macOS with your own word list for names and local terms.
  • Names. Every person, organization, place and date in the story in one list. Near-matches are flagged, so “Jon Smith” and “John Smith” don't both make it into print.
  • Headline ideas. Suggestions from Apple's on-device model, based on the story you wrote.
  • Tighten. Select a passage and Stylemark suggests cuts, one change at a time, for you to accept or reject. It leaves quotes, numbers and attributions alone, and warns you if a name drops out.
  • Word count. Set a target length and the count shows how close you are.

In docs and READMEs

If your team lints documentation with Vale, Stylemark loads the same style packs and checks against them as you type.

  • Vale rule folders. Add a pack in Settings. Words in its accept.txt join your word list.
  • Live preview. Rendered Markdown beside your text, with Mermaid diagrams drawn in place.
  • Project folders. Browse a folder of files in the sidebar, or switch to an outline with word and issue counts for each section.
  • Plain files. Stylemark reads and writes ordinary Markdown, so your work opens in any other editor and diffs cleanly in git.
  • Thesaurus. Look up a word with Control-Command-T. Choices come back in the same form, so “said” offers past-tense verbs.

Your drafts stay on your Mac

Style rules, grammar, spelling, names, headline ideas and Tighten all run on your own computer. There's no account, no cloud service and no analytics. Stylemark doesn't send your writing to us or to anyone else.

Headline ideas and Tighten use Apple Intelligence, which has to be turned on in System Settings. Every other feature works without it.
